Change Layout of Megamenu?

Hi everyone,

is it possible to change the layout of the megamenu? I want to design a megamenu to show the images of the linked categories for every submenu-item. Here is an example:

Look at the menu "tools" or in german "Werkzeuge".

I have tried to develop a module, it works fine, but everytime I change or save my menu again, the default layout is inserted.

The red one is my module and the other one are the submenu-items I don't want to show, because a have every subitem in my module.
